POWER PLAYERS : SEP - OCT

From L to R : Renaldo Frederick, Chanel Glasgow, Anderson Delysia,
Shanice Vitalis & Lynda De La Mothe

Written by Anastasia Tomkin

Power. Everyone craves it, but not many can claim it. Only a select few are bold enough to take it. To reach into the depths of their psyche and harness the discipline to turn water into wine. Power, like a serum coursing through their veins that steers them in the right direction, makes them immune to the haters, and attracts the attention of onlookers. The 48 laws of Power says that everyone admires the bold; no one honors the timid. And TVisuals’ five Power Players are anything but timid. They’re inspiring, ambitious, and all about the money moves. And they’re here to show us how to step our game up. Sounds cocky? You bet your ass it is, power isn’t for the fragile ego.

Just ask Renaldo Frederick, who we had to catch days before he leaves to become the first Trini to pursue his Master’s at the Royal Academy of the Dramatic Arts. Actors are known for being elusive, amirite? The man behind the characters dishes on his budding career finessing the road less traveled, and how he plans to evolve the local theatre and film industry. Perched on his arm is the ultimate Drama Queen, Chanel Glasgow, who is already leading the next generation of thespians like a shepherd with a staff. From cheerleader to coach in a few short years, she’s one over - achiever you’ll be dying to meet.

Rounding out our rising star actors are fashion-forward entrepreneurs Anderson Delysia and Shanice Vitalis. Most people may think Shan is just an IG model, from the cheeky photos and equally cheeky captions. But this sultry swimsuit connoisseur is lowkey redefining the image of a businesswoman. Andy, born at the intersection of altruism and high fashion, is bringing sizzling Afrodisiac style to the Southlands. Find out how this Point Fortin native is serving looks and spreading love. Last but not least, there’s the petite powerhouse Lynda de la Mothe, the talent behind all things Beauty at TVISUAL. She gives us the inside scoop on being TVISUAL's beauty director, holding down a day job, and launching an exciting career in makeup artistry - while being so damn fine.

Harness the power of the new wave of Caribbean creatives, with individual features, coming soon, exclusively on TVisual ;)

Note: “When I brought up discussion of our first September - October feature, my peers at TVISUAL were very clear on doing something grand. Immediately a number of individuals rang off in my head. Thinking about the massive talent and just all around stars, past students and friends came to mind. It’s no secret that I love working with my secondary school friends or people I’ve met during that period, I’m quite the nostalgic obviously! These individuals are definitely amongst some of the most incredibly talented human beings I’ve met.  Fast forward to almost ten years later and they’re still inspiring and dedicated to their crafts and grinds.  This made our September – October feature that much easier and special to create, a reunion! It’s a huge honor for me as a visual artist to immortalize this chapter in their lives, pre-superstardom! Haha!” - Terrance

20 QUESTIONS : MARK EASTMAN

1. What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
“Hmm, I’d say that I’m Bahamian by birth. I migrated to Trinidad at the age of five and unfortunately the last time I revisited The Bahamas was in 2008. I really need to go back soon.”

2. What is your greatest indulgence?
“Food wise…I like chocolate chip cookies. Oh! This is really funny but I love the chocolate bar ‘Lunch,’ every time I go to the grocery I have to get one. But other than food indulgences I’d say sleep.”

3. Go-to song and movie?
“Go-to song…well the thing is my go-to song choices change regularly. Right now, I love a lot of 90’s house music. The band Disclosure has an album entitled Caracal, on which they feature an artist called Lion Babe on the song ‘Hourglass,’ as well as a British Artist called Kwabs on the song ‘Willing and Able.’ So yeah, these songs are modern but they have a 90’s house music kind of feel. Ok movie wise… ‘The Fifth Element,’ anytime it is on tv I’ll watch it. I also love ‘The Immortals’ which is also in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre.”

4. What do you do with your spare time?
“Uhhh, sleep. If I’m not working I’m home as I don’t regularly go out. So, sleep and watch tv I’d say. You can say I’m somewhat of a home-body.”

5. What brings you the greatest satisfaction?
“Seeing my work completed. I think this can be the answer for most artists/creatives. Seeing your vision on paper is one thing but when you see your vision physically manifest it can be very satisfying.”

6. What is one thing everyone should try at least once in their life?
“Mmm, I’d love to go skydiving actually, so yeah, I’d say try skydiving.”

7. What is one thing you would change about the world if you could?
“Honestly, I would like for people to take better care of the environment. Littering is one of my greatest pet peeves and I cannot stand to see people not take care of their surroundings.”

8. Who is your biggest hero?
“My mom, because I always had her support. When people would try to discourage me from getting into fashion and this business and liking art, my mom was always that person behind me and encouraging me. Because of her is the reason why I’m in the space I am in right now.”

9. What is the best advice you’ve have ever been given?
“The best advice I’ve probably been given is to push myself and do more especially in terms of being creative because when you think you’re doing enough you can always go further. Robert Young, owner of the clothing brand The Cloth gave me this advice.”

10. What mantra/quote do you try to live by?
“I don’t really have a mantra or quote that I try to live by.”

11. What inspires you/your craft?
“What inspires me is usually people in everyday life. I’m a big people watcher, I always like to look at how people dress and carry themselves, so most of the time my inspiration comes from that.”

12. What is the best experience you’ve had in the industry or while pursuing your craft thus far?
“My best experience thus far has to be showing in Caribbean Fashion Week at 2015 because a series of events happen and show there was the outcome. I was scheduled to show at Tobago Fashion Week but it so happened that I missed the boat and Robert Young, who is Friends with Kingsley Cooper said that there was an opening in Caribbean Fashion Week and that’s how I was able to show.”

13. What would be one thing you’d hope to gain from the continuation of your craft?
“Just to see my brands reach where I want them to reach. I have the Mark Eastman brand as well as Dappered by Mark Eastman which is a bowtie line that I first started with and was the jump-off point for me venturing into clothing. I would love to see these grow into an entire lifestyle brand, for example; clothing, home furnishing, pattern designs, etc.”

14. What are the top three things on your perennial to-do list?
“Number one on the list would be to finish this Mark Eastman collection. Secondly, to start marketing my third series of bowties and thirdly take a vacation.”

15. What is the best gift you’ve ever received?
“Umm, I got a car for my birthday so I guess I’d say that…”

16. Where do you see yourself in five years?
“Umm, hmm. I usually shy away from this question. I guess I’d have to say that the answer ties into me furthering my brands and becoming a lifestyle brand.”

17. What is one thing you wish you knew when you were younger?
“Hmm, I’d say I wish I knew that I didn’t have to try so hard. When I was younger I used to overthink situations a lot especially when trying to get into fashion. I thought that things had to be done in one specific way or else I wouldn’t have been able to get noticed. Now I believe that you have to work hard but not be a “try-hard” if you understand what I’m saying.”

18. What would you say to your past self if you had the chance?
“Take better care of your skin.”

19. How was your TVISUAL experience?
“It was really cool I really enjoyed it. This is only my second interview and I tend to get nervous but I did feel comfortable and relaxed. You guys are a riot!”

20. Who should we highlight next?

“I have a friend that does really cool jewellery by the name of Crystal Antoine and her brand is Cocoa Vintage. Also, there is a young lady with the brand Vivre by Chelsea her brand is really interesting with a nice Caribbean aesthetic.”
